A Second before my Death

I arrived with my wife Anne at the International airport in the evening and we learned that a flight to Canary was departing in one-and-a-half hours.  I have never had any worries about flying in commercial airlines but the first time I flew in a small single-engine plane, I swore I would never get into a small plane again. That afternoon, I was lucky, someone gave me his ticket. My final comment as I left my wife indicated that I was looking for a quiet time to unseal the secret and fear which had long hidden in my very inmost heart. My wife and I very rarely quarrel, and when we do, it doesn't last very long. Before Anne left the airport, I observed that she was full of fears and she could not give any reason for that.

Just about six minutes after we took off, everything began to slow down. As a passenger in the back of a plane, I thought nothing was going wrong. So, having nothing else to do, I went through the procedures they taught us to go through in emergencies. “Get off the oxygen mask, release your safety belt, and dump yourself out.” I tried all these but already I knew I would be dead in a second.

Last night, I could remember my last son asking me series of questions, “Dad! What does it feel like to be convinced you're going to die in the next second?” “Dad! How does it feel when you are sure you cannot save yourself?” “Dad! Do people know or feel their death before they die?” All these questions gave me a concern, even when I did not pay attention to him.

Inside the plane, the noise was like the roar of Niagara. The vast sea of human beings seemed to be agitated as if by a storm. Some of the people were singing, others praying, some crying for mercy in the most piteous accents, some were screaming, some were jumping and pushing which made two women to faint while others just stood in shock as the plane began to glide down.  I was neither praying nor crying because, already I knew I would be dead in a second.

Beyond their additional job of providing safety for others, the flight attendants were moving around, smiling and providing hope as though they will not die. They were trying to provide routine services and respond to emergencies to ensure the safety and comfort of airline passengers while I was thinking about the mistakes I have already made. These attendants are trained to deal with a wide variety of emergencies, and are trained in first aid, but when we all die, who will give first aid? They seemed to have considered appearance as one of the most important factors in becoming a female flight attendant. Their uniforms were often formfitting, complete with white gloves and high heels.

The smile of one of the attendants brought into me the memories of Anne. When I remembered my wife Anne, I was speechless, I felt like crying, but I thought shedding tears, especially now I know I cannot apologize to her is worthless. I did not know what I was losing until now. Anne deserved fidelity, but I denied her such. She was really a good wife and mother, but I never appreciated her. There was a small couch against the wall of my room opposite my bed where a hid all the documents for the landed properties, which I did not inform her. I wish with all my soul I could take her hand, kiss her hand, brush her cheek with my fingers and take her to where I kept those documents. I wish I could tell her how much I regret those dreadful words I had said to her all those years ago. My wife had her own checking and savings account which I am aware and I have mine which she was not aware.

I was married with Anne for ten years and we have three beautiful kids and a stable job and just had bought a house at Kelowna. Before I got married with her, I met this girl who I thought was the love of my life, but I decided to get married with Anne. My ex-girlfriend showed me nothing but faithfulness which made me to cheat on Anne. I now realize that it is too late. I really regret this, and I wish I could apologize to my wife.

Basically, a man should only have good words for his wife. Even when she does badly. A man should call his wife with good words and sweet names. I called my wife some bad names; stupid, useless, slut, ugly and made some accusations which she did not deserve. When I married her, I promised to be with her in good faith, treat her as a wife should be treated, but all these, I never did. She always spoke to me only with gentleness; her words are always carefully chosen, but mine was harsh. I have been so guilty, I cannot think Anne or God would forgive me. I regret not being able to tell her, “I am sorry.”

“…but before I die I would like to make a statement O Lord.” "I am going to confess that you forgive me, and my confession will be my defense, although it will not be sufficient to save me." I said this prayer as though I ever believed in prayer, but only now that I know I can do nothing else to save myself. I thought I could save myself through science, but now I have found out that science has limitation. At one time I used to wear scapular and carry a rosary round in my pocket to save myself a trouble. I am not sure if this was as a result of my personal conviction but because of a story I heard. Anne once told me that I was labeling myself as a religious man, even when I was not. I did not have the rosary because I loved to say it, but because I want people to accept that I was a good man.

The intensity of cry was increasing in the plane, then I gripped onto the chair arms as the plane descended and the flight attendant's safety instructions played through my mind. It felt like the bottom was dropping out of my world. Everything about life was changing. The sins I committed ever since my first reception of the Holy Communion continued to appear.  I thought it was dangerous parachuting out of a plane, so I decided to jump out without parachute.

After falling on the tiles in my bedroom, I did not think much about the fall, but my body felt the coldness of the tiles. The sound it produced might be barely perceptible, that I could not even hear it. I felt pains in my head and then ventured to open my eyes a little wider, and a moment afterwards, a sight met my gaze which stirred my soul to its very self. I opened my eyes and I saw again the dear woman with whom I have prayed to confess to.
It was broad daylight by this time, and such of the familiar features of my room as I could see without stirring my head made me to think of a second before my death. It would be like fifty two years which I have lived. On the other side of the room, was the large altar where my wife prays. I went to the altar, after praying with them, I took an oath in my experience, never shall I go back to my life style again.

Emergency

Day before yesterday being Friday, I was in the room next to Ezinne's room. For a brief second I wanted to know whether she was pregnant but I had my own problems to worry about. She came to hostel, complaining of a sharp pain in her side. She went to his bedroom and lay down, hoping that it would go away, but it continued to persist. After some hours, the pain had grown steadily worse and finally school driver drove her to the nearby hospital. When the doctors examined her, they found that her appendix had bust and that she was in need of an immediate operation. They quickly wheeled her into the operating room and put her to sleep and cut into his body to remove the diseased organ.
The doctors later told her that if the operation had been delayed for another day, she would have died as the toxins from the bust appendix poisoned her body.
The world today is in need of a similar operation. There is within us a diseased part of the body that is poisoning the rest of the whole body. St. Paul, like a skillful surgeon, makes his diagnosis and calls for the immediate removal of that part of the body which is infected with the disease of immorality violating the sixth commandment, "You shall not commit adultery". Today, the 3rd Sunday of Lent, the first reading (Ex. 20:1-17)  is reminding us that, "The Commandment we have Forgotten". We know the truth, but we do not obey it. We who claim to be Christians, do we live up to this name? How many of our Christians have gods in their various homes? Do we still remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy? Go to University Ogige Market Road, Nsukka on Sundays; it is a market day of its own. The sooner we admit this and go back and start over again, the faster we shall get on with God. Let us talk of "This Commandment" as it lies, and go back to where we left off.
In the Gospel (John2:13-25), Jesus is reminding us that God's house shall be called a house of prayer'; but we make it a den of robbers”(Mt. 21:13). In the Nigeria's churches, people decide for themselves if they should establish their own church. Many claim to be led by God through some sentimental “feeling” in their hearts. In most cases, they will attend Bible colleges and seminaries, where they are methodically drilled to accept their school's beliefs. Every where they preach about money instead of Christ. They will tell you to come to Christ Jesus and you will receive anything you want, like success, business, good life and miracles. That is not it. There cannot be life without cross. Let us turn back to the Lord in this Lenten season and He will save us. Let us prepare our hearts for Easter by setting aside sin and fixing our eyes on Jesus. Pope Francis will always say that, Lent summons us, and enables us, to come back to the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life. Just as the responsorial Psalm 19:8 said, "Lord, you have the word of eternal life."
Happy Sunday. ©Izunwaonu

Open Letter to Jenifer on Valentine Day

I am always glad to have tidings from the kind, faithful friend of my youth whose messages of love made my heart yearn to see her again and again.

My hands were shaking as I opened your letter yesterday at the University Stadium. Before I even read it, I was in tears because I could remember how your voice was softer and seemed  to be shrinking when I first met you in my first year at University of Nigeria Nsukka.

Was that on Valentine day? “Yes, It was.

Honestly, that was the first time I saw hurt in your eyes. I do not know why I am writing this to you, because I just met you many years ago. You know,  the more you see someone the more you know more things about him.

I expected your letter before yesterday but you just surprised me, you seemed frazzled and a little irritated when you handed the letter to me.
What do you mean when you say you love me? What do you mean by these your words?

"I never loved anyone but you, never with that love which you alone merit, which is yours alone, which has always been in the depths of my heart, and will be there as long as I live".

That secret colloquy I think had become a dark night, and the chamber, lighted only by the feeble glimmer of a lamp, in such a state of comparative gloom which would have been a reminder to the young people at any time to provide themselves with more light, but they did not think so. The young people have refused to understand the real meaning of Love. There is an abysmal difference between love and sex. But now they use them interchangeably.
Let me ask you again... what do you mean when you say you love me?

If you say you love me, can you die for me? Do you love me because of what you will get from me. Just like many women would do, when they want something from you, you become their sweetheart, their honey, and everything... Who is fooling who?.
Can you defined the object of love when you say you love me? Is your object of Love the pleasure? Is it the intrinsic goodness or utility?

When almost every bloom of Spring had fallen, and only a few, withered and pale, clung to the parent stem, a leaf exclaimed to its companions: “how feeble and useless are these blossoms, though they have enjoyed but now they no longer. If she is gentle and kind to everyman; she never says “No, I won't” or “No, get out,” and never disagree with men. She keeps her clothes neat and clean, and always have quarrel with her father and mother, and not even interested in God.

I shout with Eliakim Littell, that Human hearts beat now as they did then, and are alike swayed by doubts, and fears, and hopes, with LOVE reigning above all. Thou, ' YOUTH of modern days, sighing in vain for some cold-hearted damsel; thou, dreaming maiden, who worshippest one above all, calling this devotion, respect, admiration—anything but love; and thou, calm philosopher, who hast suffered and ... He was not like those moody, sentimental lovers, always sighing and pining; still less was he addicted to those...

Let me tell you the truth, if you say you love me... Let your object of your love be intrinsic goodness not pleasure or utility. Good people love each other because of what they are in themselves. They do not use humanity in others as a means to another thing rather an end. Friends are those who wish and do good for each other. Friends are those who grieve and rejoice with another.

Since friendship lies more in loving says Aristotle, it will seem that the virtue of friendship is to love.

And lastly, let your Love be sacrificial.  As in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Remember that in 1 John 4:8 God is Love, if God is Love then if I tell you that I love you, then you can substitute God with Love. In other words, I God You. Any love that has no connection with God is not a perfect Love. I LOVE YOU. Happy Valentine Day and as today marks the beginning of the Lenten period (Ash Wednesday) I wish you a wonderful Lantern period  By Onuh Justus Izuchukwu

A wife from my village

A wife from my village by IZUNWAONU
In our village we all had different behaviors, as different as the way we ran our lives. But there was one thing common to all: that was love for one another.  I was a close friend of one such man,  Emeka Joe. He was married with four children; three boys and a girl. His wife was doing well but that was a wife his parents found for him. That same evening I came back from Emeka Joe's house, I told my Mum to get me a wife.

My Mum was very happy and she promised to get me a good wife. I was dedicated to marry  Adanna the girl my Mum suggested to me. She was a daughter of a teacher in a small village a little far from my house. My mother, as all the Igbo mothers, was very tender and concerned; she made sure she found a good wife for me.

One Sunday evening Adanna visited us, she really dressed like a woman from my village. The last time I saw a young woman dressed as a woman was ten years ago when I was in St. James Primary School. As I never meet her without experiencing a heartfelt pleasure, I stayed and talked to her, leaning over the back of our chair at the sit out. After some time, she seemed a little confused, and ceased to answer me with her usual ease of manner. I was struck with it.             “Heavens!” I said to myself, “can she, too, be uneducated.

I was engaged in observing her lip and did not notice that my Mum was at the end of the room whispering to her to be smiling. I sprang from my seat and approached her, she did not even notice my presence, until I knelt at her feet, took her hand and spoke some reassuring words to her.

Being engaged in conversation, I did not notice the presence of my Mum, until I told her that she would be my wife. I was then first attracted by the picture of a lady's hand holding a plate of well cooked food, coming down to me, and on raising my eyes I almost discovered that the owner of the hand stood before me.

When my Mum saw that I was interested, and series of investigation conducted, my Mum said to me,

"A marriage is for life, for better or for worse. This is the person that you have to care for and spend the rest of your life with. We are not like the English where you can just leave your wife and marry someone else or divorce her. In our culture you always have to stay with your wife and look after her." Divorce was rare in my village. It was a big decision for one because it was going to be difficult for one to find another wife after the divorce.

Then, when the bride price was to be paid, there was a ceremony in which we had fixed at Adanna's compound. Toward the evening that day, we set out for Adanna's house. I was sure she had already gotten everything prepared.

I remembered the conversation I heard with her from the evening before and Adanna's words was echoing in my mind.

"I love you, and I will be faithful to you."

"You know I love you very much, and if you will grant permission, I will do everything possible to go back to Europe with you." I said to her.

Looking through the window of my car, I saw a young Lady standing near Almond tree at Ifekwo village square. I looked and looked at her, and I knew, as clearly as I know that I was not myself That I loved her more than anything I had ever seen or imagined on earth was what i said which I regretted. She was very sexy almost naked. She had on a pretty white perforated dress; her hair was curled; she looked as if she was waiting forsomebody.

I asked my driver to stop then  went down to meet her. How she attracted me I could not explain. Without wasting any atom of time, I proposed to marry her but she started crying.

            "Please stop crying,"

I said while I tried to catch my breath.

            "I hope I didn't hurt you."

"No, you didn't hurt me," she told me, "at least not too bad. But where are we going? She asked.

I looked up at her face then bit my tongue, searching for something else to say. I knew I was in big trouble, but then told her we were going nowhere.

"Do you think that you can pay for my bride- price?' She asked care-freely because she did not I thought she did not know me very well."

"If I can't then I will borrow. I have many people who will be ready to lend to me, interest free.' I said in like manner.

"It seems you're already intoxicated by alcohol. How on earth do you think you will pay my bride price from borrowing? Then after the payment I will follow you and starve to death simply because I want husband." She said.

She was like "mamaiwota" and her appearance made me change direction. I told my driver to revise that we are no longer going to Adanna's house.

I was sure Adanna was already waiting for us but I was not sure of what she did when she did not see us. I came home again telling my Mum that I have found another wife; a wife I did not know her name and where she came from.

Prior to the day, I saw in my dream where.... To be continued

During one dinner, a child took a meat and was unable to chew it. He took it to his mum and said,
"Mum, can you chew this meat for me?"
The mum took it, chewed it and then gave it to the child. Because the meat was very tough, the child could not swallow it and then he took it again to the mum and said,
"Can you please swallow this meat for me; not in your own stomach but in my stomach"
In running the race of heaven, nobody will do it for you. You do your own and I do my own.

Story 2: Is your light still on?

One blind man visited a friend. When it was night, he wanted to leave for his house but the friend told him to go with their lantern and the blind man said,
"It is not necessary that I go with lantern because I cannot see with it and I have my walking stick that would help me to locate my home."
The host advised him to go with lantern so that anyone who sees him in that night would not hit him.
The blind man thought it wise and then collected the lantern. On his way home, another man hit him. The blind man out of anger had wanted to hit the man with his stick and then told him...
"are you blind, can't you see this lantern I am carrying?"
When the young man who hit the blind man noticed he was a blind man and he was actually carrying lantern, he said to him..
"Sorry... the air had blew off the light in your lantern."
Some of us are still walking around with our lanterns off. Let us ask Jesus with the man of Jericho in Luke 18:35-43 to give us light that we may see again. The scripture did not tell us that Jesus later went back to Jericho. If the blind man had listened to the crowed shunning him, he would not have had the opportunity again.

Story 3: Enjoying sin

When we were in the secondary school. There was a type of game we did called,
 "the kill and eat"
This is a football match that is played anyhow, it could be played twenty against fifteen. One day while playing kill and eat, I had dislocation and I was taken to school clinic. After some days, I started enjoying the dislocation.
The reason was as follow:
I was exempted from going to common labor,
I was given special food in the refectory
I was allowed to be late to common activities including classes.
I was not doing my morning function and I was only doing things that I liked.
Hence, when the dislocation had been cured, I had wanted to live still with the bandage... This is because of the freedom I thought I had.
Some of us are still swimming in ocean of sin and at the same time enjoying it. No, let us come out from being a slave of sin. It is true that we all are sinners but let us not be sinners searching for sin, rather, let us be sinners that run away from sin, sinners who run to God.

Story 4: Allow God to give you.

One king who loves children, decided to celebrate his birthday with children. He called every child at his palace and decided to share groundnuts on his own. He stood before his throne carrying a tray full of groundnut and asked every child to come and collect as much as his/her hand could hold. As they were collecting line by line, it reached one particular child and the child after looking at his hand, at the king and then at the other people who were there, he decided that the king should collect and then give him. When the king collected his handful of groundnut, the child knowing fully that it would not accommodate in his two hands made a bowel with his shirt, collected it and left.
The Child receives more than every other child because he asked the king to give him. If we should allow God to do his will, his will always be the best for us. If we allow God to give us, he will shower his blessings like rain as he promised in Ezekiel 34:26 that he will send his blessings like rain.

Story 5: A priest and his childhood friend

A priest had a childhood friend. His friend was not brought up in Christian way. As they grew up, the priest became a priest and his childhood friend became a herbalist; a native doctor. The priest was doing well and the native doctor was also doing well. There came a time the priest started having problems with his bishop and he became frustrated. The native doctor was doing well, he had built many mansions many places but he was not satisfied with that rather he had wanted to be a free man instead. He thought of leaving that dirty job thereby joining the priest. The priest also thought that the native doctor was in a better position and for that he thought of meeting his friend and then joining him without revealing his mind to anyone.
One day, they both made up their minds to meet each to reveal their minds one in ignorance of the other. The priest entered his car and then speed off. By coincidence, the native doctor as well speed off and the two met and had accident and they died.
Among the two, who will go to heaven?

Story 6: problem in a polygamous family

I visited a polygamous family. They welcomed me very well and I asked them if they have any problem in the family. One of them stood up and started complaining that their problem is the other family living in the other apartment. According to her, the other family is too dirty that even those cloths they hung outside there are dirty even though they washed them.
When I looked through, I saw that those cloths were dirty and I moved near the window, used my handkerchief and cleaned the louver and I found out that it was the their louver that was dirty not the cloths of the other family.

Story 7: Club 99

Because of one thing you do not have, then you will not enjoy other things you have.
A transporter was in his office counting his money and checking busses that have not returned and the gains he had for the day around 2pm. He had a visitor and the visitor told him that he (transporter) will be more happy if he could come out of that club 99. The visitor asked the transporter whether he would like to come of that club 99 and he accepted. He then took him outside his office where his gardener was cutting flower and at the same time was singing. He told the transporter that the gardener was happy because he does not belong to club 99. He told the transporter that it will only take him 10,000Naira and the 10,000Naira will be in 100Naira notes denomination. The transporter accepted.
At night, through the advice of the visitor, they wrote a letter saying that the money came from someone whom God had sent. They removed only one note out of it making the remaining 99. They kept the money in front of the gardener's room and left. When the gardener saw it, he was happy and then counted it and thought he made mistakes and then counted it again. He called his wife and asked her to count it, yet it was 99. He concluded that maybe that the wind had blew one off. He used torch and searched that night yet he did not find it.  That night, he did not sleep and before the day broke, he went out to search for it again. When the gardener came to work the next day, he changed. He did not sing as he used to do. He was no longer happy as he is used to be. This is because he had a sleepiness night... He had joined the CLUB 99.

Story 8: A son and his trust in his father

A man was living with his son in a storey building. One day, the building caught fire from the ground floor and the man was not in the building. The man struggled to enter in order to save his child but could not because of the fire. The man ran to a window towards his child's room and began to shout his son's name. He asked him to open the window and when the child opened the window, it was only smoke that was seen coming out. The child could not see the father and the father could not see the child.
The father shouted to his son to jump down that he will save him and the child said to the father,
"Because you have said so, then I will jump."
Because of the trust he has in his father, he jumped and the father saved him.
Alternative story: A child who his father was a driver of a car they were traveling with.

Story 9: There was a drama that happened between a couple.

One day, husband and wife were coming back from a place. When they were about to enter their home, the husband told the wife to go inside the house that he wants to go somewhere. The wife told him,
"no, you want to go and drink in the beer parlor"
The husband accepted and told her told her that he will drink only one cup.
The husband left but he did not come back till it was around 2.00am midnight. When the man reached home, he was really not drunk. He knocked at their iron door, even though the wife was awake, she told him to go back from where she was coming from. The man told her that he is the owner of the house that she should open the door but the woman still insist. Now, the husband told her that if she does not open the door he will commit suicide. The wife told him to go on that she will not open the door. The husband said again that if she does not open the door he will jump into the well. The wife still insist and told him to go on that nothing would make her to open the gate for him.
The man went and brought one huge stone they use to cook food outside, threw it into the well and then went and hid himself. The wife ran out shouting in order to save the husband. The husband immediately went in and locked the door. The wife came and told him to open the gate but the man responded that she should go back from where she was coming from. The wife told him that if he did not open the door, she would shout. The man asked her to shout so that when people come, she would tell them where she was coming from this night being naked. (the woman was only wearing inner wears).

Story 10: A wealthy man and his care for the poor

There was one wealthy family that use to throw unfinished bread in the trash can in front of their house. One day, one child from a poor family came and started eating the bread. The children of the rich family were shocked and they went and called their father to see what was happening. At night when they were praying, the father continued praying for that poor family. He was even crying while praying and even the family member started crying.
In the morning the next day, the father asked his son to go on top of their refrigerator to get his wallet.
The son went to the refrigerator, came back and told the father that God has answered his prayer. The father was confused and asked him "why?" The boy said to him,
"I have given the money out to those poor people whom you have prayed for."
Immediately, the man became mad at his son.
The father had capacity to pray but not to help.

Story 11: Fear

A man was sitting in his room in storey building thinking. Another man rushed  and knocked at his door saying,
"Paul, Paul, Paul... Your daughter Joy had an accident and  she died."
The next thing the man did was to jump through his window. When he was around the 4th storey, he remembered that his name was not Paul. As he reached the 3rd storey, he remembered that he had not even married talk more of having a daughter. Before he finished thinking, he was fortunate and he landed on a truck loaded with foam that was packing beside the building.

Story 12: Conditional Help

There was a huge man who had a stroke. He was going from their home to hospital in order to reduce the expenses. The family of the man bought a wheelchair and from the doctor's advice, they have to take the man around in their house so that he might receive fresh air. This man was only staying with his little child.
One day, the child was taking him around on the wheelchair and one of its legs entered a hole and the man fell. The child wanted to raise the father up but because the father was huge, he could not. The child ran to the roadside and started waiving at cars passing to stop and help him. None of the cars stopped and when the child ran back to his father, the father was humming in a great pain. The child did not know what to do again and the next thing that came to his mind was to carry a big stone. He went to the roadside, waiting for the next car to pass. The next car to come was a Range Rover Sports car. He threw the stone and smashed the windscreen of the car. The owner of the car came down shouting at the child, held the child at the neck and asked him of his father to come and repair the car. The boy took the man to his father and when the man saw the father, he had pity. He helped the man up and never asked for the repairing of his car.
Some of us are waiting for God to throw stone on us before we can love or help another.

Story 13: Where two brothers meet in love, build a church for me.

There were two brothers who were living in amity. The older one has married and the younger one still single. Their father was rich and he shared his wealth  equally amongst them. One day, the younger one thought that his brother is married, and for that, he had many people to cater for and he is single.  For him, their father should not have shared his wealth equally. He decided that he will be transferring some of his to that of his brother.

·        It is the hand that is very close to the mouth that can slap it.
·        You do not judge a person well until you have worked in his shoes for six months.
·        What do you see in your neighbor, is it the good in him or bad in him?
·        When a military man slaps you, you will know that police is your friend.
·        Two things that man cannot hind. When he drunk and when he is in love.
·        In some family, when you see a house help, you will immediately know he is not a member of the family.
·        To avoid criticisms, say nothing and be nothing.
·        What do you think you have that others do not have, is the artificial waist or the artificial breast. You are looking fresh, looking fresh for the termites. Be humble. A whole me, a whole me, who are you?
·        If you want a any massage to spread faster, tell the next person not to tell anybody.
·        Secret of long life, forgive before going to bed
·        Hate is prolong suicide
·        Forgiveness is an attribute of strong men, only strong like Jesus can forgive
·        Those who boil very fast seem to be empty
·        God forgives and forgets
·        That somebody did waka to you, you become angry but what if he does bye bye? It is just your interpretation
·        There is always need to pray either directly to God or through an intercessor
·        When man works, man works but when man prays, god works
